Gallery 111 We strive to improve the physical space of Skinner School and engage a
broader community into the planning of the arts program.
Gallery 111 was founded in Fall, 2003, as a Forum committee, dedicated
to promoting, planning, and helping to facilitate programming in the arts—visual
arts, performing arts, and literary arts at Mark T. Skinner Classical
School.

improvisation; Preston Thomas/ computer design, and La Keeta Minkens/
Coordinator.
Urban Gateways Seminar on
Securing Funding for the Arts in the Schools Gallery 111 was singled out by Urban Gateways as an exemplary parent-led
organization in support of the arts. President Randy Steinmeyer was
invited to make a presentation at this December, 2004 seminar on behalf of
Gallery 111 and Skinner.
Classroom Art Volunteer
Training Gallery 111 Secretary Susan Kuliak has recruited Skinner parents to lead
art presentations in the classrooms. Eight Skinner parents participated in
the annual “Art Volunteers in the Classroom” Training Session at The
Art Institute of Chicago in October. In addition, 3 additional training
session/ meetings were held at Skinner for parents. Gallery 111 has begun
assembling an art resource center for parents and teachers, housed in the
Skinner library, to aid them in leading art discussions and activities in
the classrooms. It consists of art reproduction posters and teacher lesson
plans based on the works of art. The goal of the Art Volunteer program at
Skinner is to have parents trained to lead short presentations on works of
art for their child’s classroom, linked thematically to concepts being
explored by the classroom teacher. The parent will facilitate a
discussion/visual exploration of a work of art, and lead a related art
activity with the children. In addition, the resources (posters, videos,
and curriculum plans) will remain on site in the library for use by the
classroom teachers. Four classroom presentations have taken place so far
this year, and more are being planned. Gallery 111 is still interested in
recruiting additional parents for this program.
